.....the undiscovered 'avant garde' city

Situated just 2 hours from Marrakech by auto-route and dual carriageway and 3 hours from the UK by air Essaouira is the undiscovered prime destination in Morocco. Having fallen on hard times with the development of Casablanca and Agadir Essaouira has reinvented itself as a secret 'avant garde' laid back destination for discerning tourists. A UNESCO World Heritage Site Essaouira has been designated as one of the locations for the Moroccan government’s developments under the 2020 investment schemes. With an International Airport just 20kms from the city centre, flights from Luton and other European hubs, Essaouira is easily accessible.
The history of the town dates back to the 7th century B.C. On their way down to Black Africa, the Phoenicians stopped over in Mogador (Essaouira). The Romans later founded a Tyrian purple factory, making the bright red dye that gave its name to the Purple Islands just off the coast of Essaouira. After came the Portuguise and Spanish finally the French who left in 1956.
In the 1960's Essaouira established its artistic credentials by attracting such musical legends as Jimmy Hendricks, Mick Jagger, Frank Zappa and Cat Stevens not to mention Maria Callas and of course Winston Churchill all who came to Essaouira to immerse themselves in the local culture. As if this was not enough  the great Hollywood film director/actor Orson Welles arrived to film Shakespears 'Othello' most of which was shot from the ramparts of the Medina.
In addition, the June 'Gnowa' music festival has now attracted International musical fame as the cities population quadruples during the four day festival.
Essaouira is ideal for school/college/family visits as there are many budget and mid-range accommodations available, in addition there are many attractions and with one of the safest beaches in Morocco students and children will be fully occupied in an ancient fortified city with a colourful history pehaps as a stand alone tour or as part of an extended studies tour.
